How to Measure Your Grow Space
Before buying a tent, measure the actual space you have available — not just the floor. Height matters just as much as footprint. A 6-foot ceiling with a 4×4 tent leaves you very little room once you factor in the light, hangers, and the plant itself.
The Three Numbers You Need
- Width × Length — your canopy footprint (what the tent covers)
- Height — minimum 6ft for most grows, 7ft+ preferred
- Clearance — at least 12–18" above the tent for ventilation and access
How Many Plants Fit?
The general rule for one plant per square foot applies to Sea of Green (SOG) style grows. For trained plants (LST, SCROG), you get more yield from fewer plants:
- 2×2 (4 sq ft) — 1 large trained plant or 4 SOG plants
- 3×3 (9 sq ft) — 2–3 trained plants or up to 9 SOG
- 4×4 (16 sq ft) — 4 trained plants or up to 16 SOG
- 5×5 (25 sq ft) — 6–9 trained plants, serious yields
Canopy vs. Tent Footprint
Your usable canopy is always slightly smaller than the tent size. Pots, walls, and corner poles eat into your space. A 4×4 tent realistically gives you about 3.5×3.5 of usable canopy — plan accordingly.
Headroom: The Most Overlooked Factor
Cannabis plants in flower can double in height during the first 2–3 weeks (the "stretch"). If you start with a 12" seedling and it doubles, you need room for the plant plus the light's minimum hang distance (typically 12–24" for LEDs). A 5ft tent is tight. A 6ft tent is workable. A 7ft tent gives you real flexibility.
Ventilation Clearance
Your inline fan and carbon filter need to fit inside the tent, usually hung from the top bars. A 4" inline fan + filter combo is about 18" long. Factor that into your height calculation before you buy.
